When getting a quote. make sure you are very detailed on the items that you tell the movers you are moving…not giving a complete list could end up costing you a lot more than you may have anticipated
While Reviewing your estimate make sure every thing you were promised is in writing
To help minimize the loss/damage to your shipment make sure to pack all your items in boxes. Many movers won’t take your items unless they are placed in a box. If you don’t have the proper box for your items many movers provide packing services that are in addition to your transportation charges. Always clearly label all your items with you first name, last name and destination state information for example:

Always make plans to have somewhere comfortable to stay while your shipment is in your mover’s possession. Often shipments can take up to 10 business days from the date you’re ready to receive at the destination to be delivered to you; therefore, it’s necessary for you to ensure that you and your family have made proper accommodations. Never ship personal effects with your movers that you may immediately need such as work clothes, personal documents and medication etc.

Choose a moving company not a brokerage! Reserving your move with a booking agency or brokerage can make for trouble before your move even starts. Often times these types of businesses are assigning prices, giving dates and making promises before they even know who is moving your load.
By booking directly with the service provider all pricing, dates and services are sold and promised as they will be delivered, not based on speculation of who will be doing your move.
What are you moving? Do you intend on moving everything in your home? If reducing your inventory, giving items away or donating, make sure these furnishings have been removed before moving day. This will insure loading will be completed quickly and efficiently as well as insuring that there is no confusion about what is moving that day.
During your delivery, whether moving across the street or across the country, the handling of your furniture up and down stairs, through doorways and loading/unloading the moving truck creates an environment where damage is possible. Even the best wrapped items can sometimes get a small scratch or dent.
When the movers are unwrapping your furnishings at the destination, make a visual inspection of each piece and notate any damages at that point. This will streamline any claims process or insurance filing and help insure you get the compensation you are entitled to.
